SERKET Salutes IMSA’s 100th Event
June 30th, 2013
SERKET Racing took part in round five of the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama Series today at Watkins Glen International. It was the series’ 100th event since its inception in 2005.
Under cool but sunny weather conditions, SERKET Racing driver Mark Llano started the 100th event in the 16th position. The Marine veteran had a tough battle with the Wright Motorsports No. 47 car of John Baker through most of the race. Llano kept fighting and was able to advance his car to take hold of the 15th position where he ultimately finished.
“It was a great battle between the two of us, very tough but clean,” Llano said. “Baker was able to stay up front and I was able to pass him on Turn 1 but he was able to take back the position on the back stretch.”
The on track battles Llano faced were not his only challenge during the race as the conditions of the track itself forced him to change his plan of attack on the fly. The SERKET Racing driver and his NGT Motorsport teammates had been practicing under wet conditions all week.
“The track conditions were wet at first but the track dried off quickly, a dry track was something we weren’t used to,” Llano said. “We had a lot of grip out there which helped. I was able to pick up some speed, so it was a great race over all.”
Post-race, Llano was able to meet with and thank a group of men from the Corning American Legion. Their mission, much like SERKET Racing, is to assist military veterans and their families. The group was invited to join in pre-race for both the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and the Rolex Sports Car Series’ Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen race.
“I think any service is a brotherhood,” Llano said. “It’s like the movie, Jerry McGuire. ‘You had at me at hello,’ when you see someone in the service. So when you get the Marines it’s a really good brotherhood. No matter what branch of service we’re all brothers. We all share a common bond and that bond is inseparable.”
Llano always dedicates time at the track to appreciate those who have, and still serve. Tomorrow, Sunday June 30, Llano will attend the Watkins Glen annual Military and Veteran Appreciation Event. He will be at the Turn 1 event from 11 to 11:30 a.m. ET for a meet-and-greet.
