SERKET, Llano Continue To Improve With Career-Best Finish at Lime Rock
May 27th, 2014
LAKEVILLE, Conn. (May 27, 2014) - SERKET Racing driver Mark Llano continued his string of career bests with a fourth-place finish in the Gold Cup Masters class in Round 5 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohamaon May 24 at Lime Rock Park.
Despite being assessed a drive-through penalty at the beginning of the race, Llano achieved a strong finish in the first of two scheduled races Saturday at the seven turn, 1.5 mile track. The No. 24 Multicam Porsche started eighth on the Gold Cup overall grid and sixth among Gold Masters competitors. Llano was in last place after serving the drive-through penalty but battled back for his career-best result.
“Race 1 overall was just flat-out awesome, and I’m happy with fourth considering the circumstances,” Llano said. “At the start of the race, I was pushing as soon as I heard green, green, green and unfortunately I got a penalty for passing the car in front me (before the start/finish line).”
The rain started just after the cars and drivers had made their way to pit lane for Race 2. The crews changed from slicks to wet tires, but race officials eventually made the decision to abandon the race due to heavy downpours, standing water and a local curfew.
“I think it was a good decision to cancel the race for the safety of the drivers,” Llano said. “We took one lap out behind the pace car, and you could literally see 3 inches of rain standing over in Turn 5, and the water was rippling down Turn 7. So it was a good call, in my opinion.”
The fourth-place finish boosted Llano into fourth place in the Gold Cup Masters Championship points standings.
SERKET will have a brief break before heading to Watkins Glen International on June 26-29 for the next two rounds of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.
